1900-11-05 (126lbs) Jack Roberts w rsc 2 (15) Nat Smith, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: J. H. Douglas. When boxing at range and stabbing in left hands, Smith was in a class of his own when showing his true ability in the opening session. However, everything changed in the second round as Roberts ignored the jabs to fire away at close quarters. Having dropped Smith with a right to the jaw for the first knockdown, Roberts had his man over on another four occasions in the second before the referee stepped in to bring matters to a halt.
Although not billed as a title fight, with both men inside 126lbs Roberts claimed the English championship at the weight on the result. He then challenged Will Curley to decide the rightful champion.
