1900-11-12 (116lbs) Harry Ware w pts 20 Pedlar Palmer, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Harry Preston. This one was billed for the English 116lbs belt after Palmer (116) had reclaimed his old world title claim at the weight when it was clear that Terry McGovern could no longer get down to that poundage. As expected, the men put up a very clever fight with lots of good work being done on the inside and at long range. Both men were down a couple of times, but they were classified as coming from slips not punches. Towards the end as Ware (115½) tired and Palmer appeared to be taking the initiative, there was a fair amount of messy work, and in the 17th round the latter was thrown over to cries of “foul” to no avail.
Following the decision rendered in Ware’s favour not only was Palmer stunned but so was the crowd. Thus, it came as no surprise when a few days later, on 20 November, the loser called for a rematch.
