31 December (115lbs) Patsy Donovan w co 9 (20) Frank Welch, Cedar Bark AC, Phillipsburgh, New Jersey, USA. Billed for the 115lbs American title, Welch collapsed in the ninth round and was counted out before being removed to hospital, where he passed away eight days later having never regained consciousness. Donovan was arraigned immediately afterwards, eventually being acquitted on 30 January 1901 following a trial. At the hearing, medical experts stated that the 21-year-old Welch would have carried the injury (blood clot on the brain) into the contest, while other witnesses stated that there had been very few solid blows landed prior to Welch collapsing. The whole affair left Donovan so traumatised that he retired soon after.
