1901-01-15 (130lbs) [[Art Simms]] w pts 20 [[Eddie Gardner]], Armory Theatre, Massillon, Ohio, USA. Referee: Ed McKean. With both men inside the stipulated 130lbs, Simms’ American title claim at the weight was at risk and he made a good start before Gardner began to share the points with him. Then, in the eighth, Simms was hurt by a body blow and seeing that the referee was not going to allow a foul he went down for ‘nine’. Taking a breather, Simms went quiet for several rounds, but in the 13th he was fighting with renewed confidence and although unable to knock Gardner out the referee’s decision was his.
