1901-01-25 (124lbs) Tim Callahan w pts 20 Eddie Gardner, Mahoning AC, Youngstown, Ohio, USA. Referee: Billy Bissell. A return fight between the pair saw a mess up over the articles which allowed Callahan to make 124lbs while Gardner was forced to weigh in at 122lbs. The fight eventually went ahead, with the winner holding on to his American 124lbs title claim after having a shade the better of 15 of the 20 rounds contested. According to the Youngstown Vindicator newspaper report, all the rounds were chock full of fast work and hot mix-ups in which there were vicious exchanges of swings, jabs, uppercuts and hooks from both hands. Even up to the seventh, it looked to be all over in that round when Gardner was dropped by a right to the jaw. Although Gardner was sent reeling, when up again he fought back strongly with both hands. Right through it was that kind of fight, and in the 20th more rights to the jaw saw Gardner twice on all fours, only for the gamester to come back with blows of his own to have Callahan backing off.
