1901-04-29 (142lbs) [[Matty Matthews]] w pts 20 [[Tom Couhig]], New Monarch AC, Buckingham Theatre, Louisville, Kentucky, USA. Referee: Ike English. Made at 140lbs, this was also a defence of Matthews’ 142lbs welterweight title and although Couhig (139) had the better of it up to the eighth round in the ninth after his nose was broken the tide turned. From then on Matthews (139½) moved ahead and in the 13th he almost had Couhig, badly cut on the left eye, out before settling for a points win.
