1901-05-24 (142lbs) Rube Ferns w co 10 (20) Matty Matthews, Crescent AC, Mutual Street Rink, Toronto, Canada. Referee: Marvin Smith. Made at 142lbs, up until the end Matthews had much the better of Ferns, but in the tenth session everything changed after the latter rushed his rival through the ropes. On the resumption, Ferns quickly put Matthews down for a moment, and when the latter got to his feet he was immediately dropped again by a tremendous left prior to being counted out.

According to Patsy Sweeney (The Ring magazine, page 39, May 1925), he had a crack at Matthews’ welter title on 2 September 1901 at the Nutmeg AC, Hartford, Connecticut. Whether Matthews was still claiming the title I am not sure, but in a fight made at 138/140lbs, he came in six pounds over the weight and outpointed Sweeney over 20 rounds. If Sweeney, inside 140lbs, had won I guess he could have had a weak claim but he was well beaten by Matthews, even going down in the 19th round to avoid punishment.
