22 July (106lbs) Harry McDermott w pts 20 Charlie Exall, Standard Theatre, Gateshead, England. Referee: George Dunning. Billed for the English 106lbs title, £50 a side and a £127 purse, McDermott forced the fight straight from the bell and despite being perplexed by Exall’s bobbing and weaving tactics he continued with his attack. Exall certainly had a plan and in the fourth he dropped McDermott after landing heavily to the wind. However, McDermott was soon surging back and in the tenth he almost had Exall over with right-hand smashes to the head. Twice after that Exall was saved by the bell, with only his cleverness and gameness keeping him going, and in the final session just when it seemed that he would finally succumb he denied all of McDermott’s efforts to much applause.
