1901-09-05 (122lbs) Kid McFadden w disq 6 (20) Solly Smith, California AC, Oak Park Velodrome, Sacramento, California, USA. Referee: Mr Carillo. Made at 122lbs with both men inside the limit, the fight was full of fouls almost from beginning to end with both men sharing the blame after McFadden had started it when almost knocking Smith out at the end of the second round when the latter had slipped to his knees. After the referee had taken no action, Smith decided on retribution and in the ensuing sessions he hit on the break, hit low on the inside and eventually butted McFadden in the seventh, an act that brought about his disqualification. Had Smith kept his cool he would have won easily as he hit McFadden pretty well as much as he pleased, the local being saved by the bell in the fourth, floored in the fifth and badly treated in the sixth. Knowing that Terry McGovern would never make the weight again, McFadden, weighing just over 116lbs, claimed both the American 118 and 120lb titles on the result. While never defending at 118lbs, McFadden would put his 120lbs title claim to the test in London against Ben Jordan some ten months later.
