1901-09-23 Jack Scales w co 11 (20) Jack Palmer, Ginnett’s Circus, Newcastle, England. Referee: George Dunning. In what was stated at the time to be a defence of his English title claim Scales (175) took on a much lighter man in Palmer (154), who showed up well early on before being brought to the boards in the fourth with a right swing to the jaw, following a sustained burst of body blows. After being punched all around the ring in the fifth Palmer came back well in the sixth to have Scales over towards the end of the session. Palmer continued to take the fight to his man, and although Scales had him over three times in the eighth he was also forced to take a count. Down once in the ninth and twice in the tenth, when Palmer was battered down by lefts and rights in the 11th and counted out a terrible uproar ensued due to an objection that the count was just five seconds. Immediately following the decision the referee stated that he had no other course open to him as he had nothing to do with the timekeeper, upon whom both men had agreed.
