1901-10-24 (108lbs) Jack Player w co 9 (20) Albert Mortimer, New Adelphi Club, The Strand, London, England. Referee: Ed Plummer. With both men inside 107lbs, Player became another claimant to the English 108lbs title on winning. The opening three rounds saw both men getting their punches off, but the first real activity took place in the fourth when Player, having slipped to the ground, got up and tore into Mortimer, whose left eye was damaged in the ensuing tear-up. From there on Player got to work, setting the pace and handing out plenty of punishment. In the seventh and eighth Player went with the right, and although Mortimer was scoring well with the left it all came to nought after a thundering right cross dropped him for the full count in the ninth.
