1901-10-30 (130lbs) Martin Duffy w pts 10 Art Simms, Light Guard Armory, Detroit, Michigan, USA. Referee: George Siler. In what was Simms’ first defeat as a professional, Duffy did most of the leading in a very fast contest and was reckoned to have landed twice the amount of blows to that of his opponent. Duffy got to Simms’ jaw repeatedly and had him extremely groggy in the third round before settling for the points win. Following this, it was reported in the Toronto Daily Mail (16 January 1902) that Duffy should now be recognised as the world 130lbs champion after outpointing Simms in a match made at 135lbs. On the basis of that, one can only assume that Duffy scaled below 130lbs. However, in their return match at the Twentieth Century AC, Detroit on 21 January 1902, which was again made at 135lbs, both men were over 130lbs and Duffy, who won on points over 15 rounds, was soon fighting at 140lbs.
