1901-10-30 (165lbs) Jack Root w co 2 (20) Jim Ryan, Empire AC, Louisville, Kentucky, USA. Referee: Bat Masterson. Although advertised as being for the middleweight championship of the West according to the Chicago Tribune, neither man could get below 158lbs at this stage of their careers and, reportedly weighing between 162 and 165lbs, this has to be seen as another defence of Root’s 165lbs title claim. Ryan, who was blind in one eye, forced the fight from the opening bell before being staggered by a heavy blow to the jaw in the second round. Moments later, Root struck again when a big left swing to Ryan’s jaw saw the latter floored and counted out.
