1901-11-28 (145lbs) Rube Ferns w pts 15 Charley Thurston, Light Guard Armory, Detroit, Michigan, USA. Referee: Malachy Hogan. Although no weights were given, the Chicago Tribune stated that Ferns made a successful defence against Thurston, while the Detroit Free Press confirmed that this was a defence of Ferns’ 145lbs title claim with both men making the weight. Although Thurston was the quicker and ducked and blocked beautifully at times, Ferns’ blows were by far the more effective despite the crowd calling for a draw.
