1901-12-13 (138lbs) Joe Gans w rtd 14 (15) Bobby Dobbs, Eureka Club, Maennerchor Hall, Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Although Dobbs scaled in the region of 142lbs, it is thought that Gans (135) who agreed to depose of his rival inside ten rounds or forfeit the purse, based his 138lbs American title claim on his victory. Although Dobbs was almost out in the ninth and tenth rounds he somehow stayed on to claim the forfeit before being retired. After despatching Joe Youngs inside four rounds of a six rounder at the Washington SC, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 17 days later Gans took on another New Yorker in Yonkers’ Tom Broderick (w co 6 at the Eureka AC, Baltimore on 3 January 1902) and despite a lack of weights it was reported to be his first excursion among the welters. This suggests that Gans weighed in the region of 138lbs even if Broderick was considerably heavier. On 2 May 1902, the Sporting Life reported that Gans, the American 138lbs champion, had challenged all England, Pat Daly, Johnny Hughes and Jabez White preferred.
