1901-12-18 (142lbs) Joe Walcott w rsc 5 (20) Rube Ferns, International AC, Fort Erie, Ontario, Canada. Referee: Ed McBride. With both men inside the stipulated 142lbs the title changed hands after Ferns was rescued by the referee, having been downed twice and battered by terrific body blows, as well as by heavy right and left swings to the head.

On 1 April 1903, Walcott drew over 20 rounds against Billy Woods at Hazard’s Pavilion, Los Angeles, California. Listed as a title fight in the Ring Record Book, I have yet to ascertain the weights, although Woods was almost certainly in the middleweight class at this stage of his career.
