1901-12-19 (122lbs) Austin Rice w pts 20 George Dixon, Opera House, New London, Connecticut, USA. Referee: Joe Pollock. Given American title billing at 122lbs, the fight proved to be a fast one with Rice going well during the opening ten rounds before the sluggish Dixon got himself back into it. The last few sessions saw both men having success with heavy blows from either hand.

Although the winner claimed the title, with Abe Attell getting more support and actually involved in negotiations to fight Terry McGovern at 122lbs Rice’s claim did not get off the ground, especially as he was also struggling to make that weight.
