1902-01-20 (146lbs) Tom Woodley w co 14 (15) Jim Styles, Ginnett’s Circus, Newcastle, England. Billed for the English 146lbs title, with both men inside the weight, it was one of the best contests ever seen on Tyneside and placed Woodley at the top of the 146lbs championship tree. The two men started as they meant to carry on when unloading heavy punches and in the second round Woodley had Styles on one knee from a terrific left to the face. Both men continued fighting fiercely and the action swung back and forth with first one man landing heavily followed by the other, but after several first-class sessions it was felt the Styles was ahead on points at the end of the tenth. It looked as though Woodley was finished in the 12th, having been floored by a right to the jaw, but he recovered well in the 13th to have Styles down with a swinging right to the head before flooring the latter for the full count with a short left to the body in the 14th.
