1902-01-23 (106lbs) [[Digger Stanley]] drew 12 [[Frank Morcombe]], Wonderland, Mile End, London, England. Referee: Ed Plummer. Although there was no title billing and it was contested over two-minute rounds, both men were inside 106lbs thus putting Stanley’s claim to the title at risk. There was never much between them in what was a clever contest, with Stanley (104) looking at his best when going to work with both hands while Morcombe (105) steadied his rival with solid rights to the head. After both men slugged it out in the ninth and tenth, and Stanley began to edge it, the final session saw Morcombe make up any leeway with a strong display that would earn him a share of the honours.

1902-01-23 (106lbs) Digger Stanley drew 12 Frank Morcombe, Wonderland, Mile End, London, England. Referee: Ed Plummer. Although there was no title billing and it was contested over two-minute rounds, with both men inside 106lbs Stanley’s claim to the title was at risk. There was never much between them in what was a clever contest, Stanley (104) looking at his best when going to work with both hands while Morcombe (105) steadied his rival with solid rights to the head. After both men slugged it out in the ninth and tenth, and Stanley began to edge it, the final session saw Morcombe make up any leeway with a strong display that would earn him a share of the honours.

Later in the year, on 1 October, Stanley challenged Owen Moran over 20 rounds at 106lbs, but gaining weight quickly took his claim up a class.

On 31 March, Jim Kenrick stated that having challenged all the top 106lbs men repeatedly to no avail he was now claiming the title.
