1902-01-23 (116lbs) Jim Williams w co 2 (20) Pedlar Palmer, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: A. F. Bettinson. Billed for the English 116lbs title, with Williams (115¾) named as the champion and Palmer (116) the ex-champion, this contest furnished one of British boxing’s major upsets of the time. Forgetting everything he knew about the game, Palmer went toe-to-toe with Williams from the opening bell and after just four minutes and three seconds of fighting he had been counted out after being floored five times, four of the knockdowns coming in the first round.
Further to a ten-round points win at catchweights against Digger Stanley on 16 June, Palmer, who had been struggling with the weight, moved up amongst the 118 and 120lbs men.
