1902-01-31 (165lbs) Jack Root w disq 7 (20) George Gardner, Mechanics Pavilion, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Phil Wand. Advertised for the middleweight title, despite it being articled at catchweights according to the Chicago Tribune, what was really at stake was Root’s light-heavyweight (often reported as middleweight) title claim at 165lbs in this one.
Unfortunately for Gardner he suffered the misfortune of having his left eye practically closed in the second round after Root had got home with a solid right and was not himself thereafter. Regardless of that Gardner had Root on the floor from a right to the side of the head in the fourth, but the latter got up and cleverly clinched and stalled to get through to the bell. From thereon it was all Root and by the sixth Gardner had resorted to going low, with claims of a foul being made on at least two occasions. With Root boring in methodically in the seventh, Gardner became even wilder with his punches and after sending his rival to the floor groaning in pain following a hefty blow to the groin he was disqualified at 1.46 of the session.
