1902-02-03 (128lbs) Will Curley w co 3 (15) Jack Roberts, Ginnett’s Circus, Newcastle, England. Referee: Robert Watson. Billed for the English 128lbs title, this was the opportunity that Curley had been waiting for, having been beaten by Roberts just over a year earlier. Right from the opening bell it could be seen that both men meant business, the fighting being sharp and decisive. By the end of the second round Curley had already shown great cleverness in avoiding Roberts’ furious attacks, and the latter’s left eye was fast closing. In the third, the fighting continued in the same vein with several furious exchanges before the contest was terminated after a heavy right-hand counter from Curley sent Roberts writhing to the floor where he was counted out.

Incidentally, Roberts continued to claim the English 126lbs title as Curley (although inside 128lbs) was unable to make 126lbs. Meanwhile, Curley challenged the world at 128lbs.
