1902-03-17 (133lbs) Frank Erne w co 6 (15) Curley Supples, International AC, Fort Erie, Ontario, Canada. Made at 133lbs according to the Buffalo Evening News, Erne fought in a different fashion than normal, staying on the inside and looking to rough the challenger up. Having been shaken up in the third round by a left uppercut, Erne quickly fought back to put Supples down with a right cross. Both men took a breather in the fourth, but come the fifth Erne was right on top with solid blows to the body and stinging left jabs to the face, and in the sixth he dropped Supples for the full count after the latter had walked on to a cracking right to the jaw.
Just a few days later, on 21 March, Erne took on Gus Gardner (w pts 6) at the Wabash AC, Chicago, Illinois in what some papers called a title challenge by the latter. However, with no weights to hand one must be cautious as to whether it was or was not. Although winning handily, Erne was certainly inconvenienced after having two ribs broken midway through the contest.
