1902-04-21 (134lbs) Jabez White w rsc 5 (10) Bill Chester, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: J. H. Douglas. Although the Sporting Life and Mirror of Life gave the contest title billing at 134lbs, despite both men claiming the English championship at the weight it was only a ten rounder and was not looked upon as a championship match in many other parts of the country. Following a cautious opening White and Chester began to look for their punches, and in the third round they were both seen to be groggy at times. Coming out for the fourth, looking for a quick win, Chester staggered White on a couple of occasions, but was soon banking on defence as the latter came right back at him. The fifth session was the end of the road for Chester, who after being dropped twice by solid lefts and rights was rescued by the referee when it was clear he could not survive much longer.
Regardless of it being contested over ten rounds or nor, White’s claim was immeasurably strengthened on the result. Three days later it was reported in the Sporting Life that he was the English champion.
