1902-05-29 (138lbs) [[George Elbows McFadden]] w disq 10 (20) [[Gus Gardner]], Poli’s Theatre, Waterbury, Connecticut, USA. Referee: Fred Bullen. Although not reported as such, with both men articled to weigh-in between 135 and 138lbs McFadden’s 138lbs American title claim had to be up for grabs in this one. After nine rounds of fierce fighting followed by two minutes of heavy work in the tenth, when McFadden went to the floor with Gardner on top of him the latter being immediately disqualified. According to press reports of the day, it had been a tough fight with the referee seemingly favouring McFadden when pulling Gardner out of the clinches while allowing the title claimant to use foul tactics which included hitting with the elbows. and the latter was thrown out for throwing his man.
