1902-05-29 (138lbs) [[George Elbows McFadden]] w disq 10 (20) [[Gus Gardner]], Poli’s Theatre, Waterbury, Connecticut, USA. Referee: Fred Bullen. Although not reported as such, with both men articled to weigh in between 135 and 138lbs McFadden’s 138lbs American title claim had to be up for grabs in this one. Following nine rounds of fierce fighting and two minutes of heavy work in the tenth, after McFadden went to the floor with Gardner on top of him the latter was immediately disqualified for throwing. According to press reports of the day, it had been a tough fight with the referee seemingly favouring McFadden when pulling Gardner out of the clinches while allowing the title claimant to use foul tactics which included hitting with the elbows.
