1902-06-23 (154lbs) Joe Walcott w pts 15 Tommy West, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: Tom Scott. Advertised as a world title fight, it was, in fact, contested at catchweights with no weights announced, although both men were known to be inside 154lbs. While Walcott deserved the win he did not impress the audience to any great degree, being far too eager to hold on when fighting was what they wanted to see. Regardless of that, Walcott proved to be a good exponent of body punching and while there were no knockdowns accomplished West was extremely wary. In the seventh round West’s left eye began to swell but it did not stop him from taking the fight to Walcott at various stages, despite having little success. The Sporting Life reported that even when West was hammering in blows to Walcott’s head it was like hitting a post and seemed to have no effect on the latter whatsoever. On the very next day Walcott challenged the winner of Tommy Ryan v Johnny Gorman to decide the middleweight championship.
