1902-06-25 Denver Ed Martin w rsc 5 (10) Sandy Ferguson, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Due to meet Bob Armstrong in a ‘black’ title fight, with the latter indisposed Martin was matched against Ferguson, who had outpointed Woolwich’s Ben Taylor over ten rounds at Wonderland, London on 3 March. Strangely, Taylor had been spoken of as the English champion in the Sporting Life on 14 May.
Reported as an English title fight, which it was not, according to Martin it was a defence of the world heavyweight title he was claiming due to James J. Jeffries' refusal to meet him. Martin was soon on top, his physical strength and aggression wearing Ferguson down, and after the latter became reckless it would be just a matter of time before the contest came to an end. Early in the fifth, Martin floored Ferguson with a right hook to the jaw and on getting up in a dazed condition the Canadian was dropped three more times before the referee finally rescued him.
