1902-06-27 (135lbs) Joe Gans w co 3 (20) George Elbows McFadden, Woodward’s Pavilion, San Francisco, California, USA. Although stated by some sources to be a world title fight at 133lbs, Gans defended at 135, with McFadden weighing in at 131lbs the day before. Having done little but block punches coming his way, in the third round McFadden was counted out after Gans had smashed in a left-right combination to his jaw that sent him crashing.

On the result, McFadden’s American title claim at 138lbs also passed to Gans.
