1902-07-25 Denver Ed Martin w pts 15 Bob Armstrong, Crystal Palace Grounds, Sydenham, London, England. Referee: Tom Scott. Billed for the ‘black’ world championship, it was quickly apparent that Martin was the better stylist of the two men, especially when using smart footwork to avoid Armstrong’s rushes and sending in pile-driving left jabs. In the fifth round, Martin’s better work paid off when he dropped Armstrong with a heavy right uppercut but he was lucky to get away without a warning when he hit the latter whilst he was still on the floor. Although Armstrong’s powers of recovery were good he could not hold off Martin indefinitely and in the 11th a right to the jaw had him over again. Groggy at the bell, Armstrong came right back and despite being second best over the remaining four sessions Martin was unable to take further advantage, having to settle for the points decision.
