1902-07-25 James J. Jeffries w co 8 (20) Bob Fitzsimmons, Athletic Club Arena, San Francisco, California, USA - WORLD. Referee: Ed Graney. Given the opportunity to regain his old title, Fitzsimmons (172) started well with the left hand picking off the slower champion and after three rounds Jeffries (219) looked a mess, his face covered in blood. At the end of the fifth Fitzsimmons was still going strong, making Jeffries miss, while jabbing and dropping in right hands. In the sixth Jeffries at last began to weaken Fitzsimmons with tremendous rights to the body and although the latter came back well to take the seventh he was caught by a cracking right to the body in the eighth and dropped down in agony to be counted out.
On 19 December 1903, at Sutton’s Broadway Theatre, Butte, Montana, Jeffries took on Jack Munroe in a four-round exhibition in which he was contracted to stop his rival inside the distance or lose both the decision and the $500 stake money. With Munroe still on his feet at the final bell, he claimed the victory and would eventually meet Jeffries for the championship in August 1904.
