1902-10-13 (135lbs) Joe Gans w co 5 (20) Kid McPartland, International AC, Fort Erie, Ontario, Canada. Referee: Charlie White. The Buffalo Courier reported this to be a world title bout with neither man above 135lbs, and while McPartland did the early fighting once Gans got into his stride it was all over. Dropped by a straight right in the third before being sent crashing from a left hook to the body, McPartland was counted out at 2.25 of the fifth.

A day later Gans took on Dave Holly (nd-w pts 10 at the Athletic Club, Lancaster, Pennsylvania), treating it as an exhibition. Holly, who was announced as being lighter than the champion, made no attempt to win, holding on at every opportunity.
