Line 1: Line 1:
1902-10-16 (126lbs) Young Corbett w rtd 7 (10) Joe Bernstein, Eureka AC, Germania Maennerchor Hall, Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Referee: Joe Pollock. Made at catchweights with Corbett now unable to make 126lbs, Bernstein (124½) would have undoubtedly claimed the nine-stone championship had he won. Despite everything, this was still a billed title fight and Bernstein certainly went for it, cutting Corbett over the left eye in the third round and making life difficult for the champion before being pulled out by his corner in the seventh after breaking his left hand. From thereon, Corbett would defend the featherweight title at weights beyond 126lbs, while America looked for a successor, preferably under 122lbs.
