1902-10-23 (158lbs) Jack Palmer w co 2 (10) Tom Smith, National AC, Marylebone, London, England. Billed for the English 158lbs title, despite it being scheduled for only ten rounds, both men were said to have made the weight. Standing several inches over the powerfully built Smith, the man from Benwell, near Newcastle, went straight on to the attack, doing a tremendous amount of damage to his rival in the opening session. Although Smith came back well at times he was unable to halt Palmer’s charge, and in the second round he was knocked out by solid blows to the head after being softened up by body punches.
