1902-11-08 (130lbs) Will Curley w pts 15 Billy Barrett, Ginnett’s Circus, Newcastle, England. Referee: Sam Francis. Given world title billing at 130lbs, Curley (128½) clearly took the opening five rounds, selecting his punches better than the onrushing American, and following several more even affairs he again picked up the pace in the last third. It was Curley’s straighter punches against the swings of Barrett (130) that were winning the day, but in a sensational 13th the local boy looked like being knocked out. In that session Curley was driven to the ropes as Barrett set about him with both hands, and after being backed up a terrific right to the jaw dropped him heavily. Although getting up at ‘five’ it was clear that Curley was badly hurt, but by some clever defensive work, allied to holding on whenever he could, he held up Barrett all the way to the final bell.
