1902-11-26 (135lbs) Jimmy Britt w co 7 (20) Frank Erne, Yosemite Club, Mechanics’ Pavilion, San Francisco, California, USA. Made at 135lbs ringside, this was one of the fastest contests ever witnessed in the region, with Britt proving better in the clinches while Erne used the straight left to advantage. After a furious sixth round both men went back to their respective corners groggy, but it was Erne who was the worst affected and after taking a count of ‘seven’ from a punch to the solar plexus in the seventh he was knocked out by the same punch moments later.
Britt now claimed the ‘white’ title on the grounds that he would not be challenging Joe Gans, preferring to draw the 'Colour Bar' instead. Having earlier knocked out the former champion, Kid Lavigne, inside eight rounds on 25 May at the same venue, this was Britt’s fourth professional start.
