1902-12-22 (145lbs) Matty Matthews w pts 10 Rube Ferns, Kenyon’s Hall, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Referee: Buck Cornelius. Made at 145lbs, the contest was fast and scientific with Matthews outclassing Ferns in all bar the clinches, where the latter did his best work. Nine rounds clearly belonged to Matthews, but in the sixth he was badly troubled by a vicious attack from Ferns and had to defend for all his worth to get through. Following the contest between two former titleholders, Matthews claimed the ‘white’ version of the title at that weight.
