1903-01-14 (130lbs) Young Corbett w rtd 18 (20) Austin Rice, Whittington Park Arena, Hot Springs, Arkansas, USA. Referee: Pat Early. Billed for the world featherweight title, although no weights were mentioned in the papers of the day it was thought to have been at 130lbs, a poundage that Corbett was comfortable with at the time. The Chicago Tribune recorded that Rice was forced to give weight away in order to land his opportunity. Relatively even for the opening eight rounds though it was becoming increasingly obvious that Corbett carried the firepower, from the ninth onwards Rice only saved himself by ‘running’. Rice, in survival mode, was now playing for time but when Corbett did catch up with him he was in trouble, and after being badly larruped in the 17th his seconds retired him at the bell to start the 18th.
