1903-01-20 (105lbs) Willie Schumacher w rtd 10 (20) Dave Watson, Avonla AC, Glens Falls, New York, USA. Referee: Lear Burns. Held in private in the French Mountains, and billed for the world 105lbs title, a record produced by Luckett Davis brings to light that Schumacher, a brilliant amateur, was taking part in only his third pro contest. Starting just after midnight, Schumacher was immediately at work with the left jab and seldom did he miss, Watson’s face always seeming to be in the way. Knocked clean through the ropes in the first before being belted to the floor by a solid right to the jaw in the third, Watson looked a sorry sight as the blood flowed freely. Watson was again weakened in the fifth, and in the sixth he was floored for ‘nine’, having taken a left-right to the jaw. Dropped in the seventh after Schumacher began to concentrate on the body, Watson somehow got through the eighth and ninth sessions before more heavy blows to the ribs had their effect in the tenth and forced him to retire at the end of the session. Both men were former amateur champions of America.
