1903-02-05 Jack Johnson w pts 20 Denver Ed Martin, Hazzard’s Pavilion, Los Angeles, California, USA. Referee: Harry Stuart. Billed for the ‘black’ title, Johnson unified it following an excellent victory over Martin after one of the best fights seen at the venue. After ten rounds of clever boxing Johnson finally caught up with Martin in the 11th, knocking him down twice with right-hand smashes to the head and almost forcing the win, only for the latter to be saved by the bell. Making a great recovery in the 12th, Martin gradually picked himself up and had a shade the best of the leading off for the remainder of the contest, while Johnson relied on countering his man. There was never much between them other than the knockdowns suffered by Martin in the 11th and it was Johnson’s good work in that session which ultimately afforded him the decision.
