1903-02-23 (145lbs) Matty Matthews w pts 10 Tom Couhig, Allegheny AC, Mason Hall, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Matthews, who was introduced as the 145lbs ‘white’ welterweight champion, defended his title claim in this one according to the Pittsburgh Gazette. Matthews had the better of it throughout, catching Couhig’s early rushes with heavy swings to the jaw before dropping him twice in the fifth. Although being put down again in the ninth, a heavy right to the jaw doing the job, Couhig made it to his feet and held on the hear the final bell.
