1903-02-26 Jack Johnson w pts 20 Sam McVey, Hazzard’s Pavilion, Los Angeles, California, USA. Billed as a defence of his ‘black’ title, Johnson was given a hard time of it by McVey and had to be at his cleverest to avoid the heavy rights thrown at him by his aggressive opponent. Although McVey received severe punishment, mainly from Johnson’s solid left jab, he made it to the final bell where it could be seen that neither man was in great condition.
Again risking his ‘black’ title claim, Johnson successfully came through a six rounder against Joe Butler (nd-w co 3 at the Washington AC, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) on 11 May.
