1903-02-26 Jack Johnson w pts 20 Sam McVea, Hazzard’s Pavilion, Los Angeles, California, USA. Billed as a defence of his ‘black’ title, Johnson was given a hard time of it by McVea and had to be at his cleverest to avoid the heavy rights thrown at him by his aggressive opponent. Although McVea received severe punishment, mainly from Johnson’s solid left jab, he made it to the final bell where it could be seen that neither man was in great condition.

Again risking his ‘black’ title claim, Johnson successfully came through a six rounder against Joe Butler (nd-w co 3 at the Washington AC, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) on 11 May.
