1903-03-26 (105lbs) Jimmy Walsh w pts 10 Willie Schumacher, Essex AC, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Billed for the American 105lbs title, as reported in the Boston Post, Walsh was down in the first round from a right swing to the jaw but had a decided advantage in the last five sessions when fighting at long range.

Walsh quickly moved up in weight leaving Schumacher as the obvious candidate to take over.

After Schumacher’s next fight, a ten-round points win over Terry Edwards in a private club house in uptown NYC, New York on 15 April, the next day the Los Angeles Times reported that Schumacher should be considered as the American champion at the weight. Whether or not the fight against Edwards involved his 105lbs title claim is not clear as no weights were reported, but there is every chance it was due to the amount of money put up.
