1903-05-11 (120lbs) Pedlar Palmer w pts 12 Digger Stanley, Wonderland, Mile End, London, England. Referee: Sid Rushton. With Palmer limited to 120lbs, and a handicap match with Stanley not expected to make anything like that, it was still seen by some to be a defence of Palmer’s title claim at the weight despite two-minute rounds (not the recognised three) being in place. Starting at a fair pace, both men showing much cleverness, Palmer appeared to have more power and accuracy than Stanley, having the latter down twice in rounds six and seven. Stanley made a good comeback in the ninth, scoring well with the left, but in the last three sessions it was all Palmer, sending out straight punches like piston rods, who added to his lead.
