1903-05-25 (116lbs) Joe Bowker w pts 15 Andrew Tokell, NSC, Covent Garden, London, England. Referee: J. H. Douglas. Billed for the English 116lbs title, Bowker (115¼) successfully defended his claim at the weight when taking the decision over Tokell (116) in a very fast contest. For the first few rounds Bowker was content to slip the lead as his rival did the forcing, but from the fifth onwards he began to pick up the points with prods from each hand, either going forward or on the back foot. At times Tokell was nonplussed, but try as he might he could hardly lay a glove on Bowker, who was spinning around him while landing with both hands before moving away. The final stages saw Bowker cruising and dancing out of harm's way as Tokell desperately tried to turn the fight in his favour. At the final bell there was only one winner and it was not Tokell.
On 9 June, Tokell challenged all England, Bowker preferred, and a day later Tommy Feltz, the American, stated that he would like to fight Tokell in England. During the next few weeks, Jim Williams once again restated his claim to the English 116lbs title, while Harry Ware challenged all England, Tokell preferred.
