1903-05-28 (142lbs) Martin Duffy w co 13 (20) Rube Ferns, Music Hall, Louisville, Kentucky, USA. Articled at 142lbs, the Chicago Tribune confirmed the billing to be for the ‘white’ American welterweight title, currently in the possession of Ferns. Proving to be a cut above what was expected, Duffy proved to be the complete master of Ferns as he jabbed him silly and pounded his face into a bloody mess before knocking him out with a single right hand in the 13th. Mindful of Ferns’ punching ability, Duffy had used his good footwork, longer reach and blocking ability to negate much of the champion’s work as he gradually ground him down.
