Line 1: Line 1:
1903-07-04 (165lbs) George Gardner w co 12 (20) Jack Root, International AC, Fort Erie, Ontario, Canada. Referee: Ed McBride. With the latest two so-called championship contests decided at 175 and 170lbs, respectively, this one was made at 165lbs. The Chicago Tribune claimed that, with three days to go, both men were already down to the weight, give or take a couple of pounds. Starting well, especially when banging in left hooks to the body, Gardner was well on top and in the ninth round incessant pressure saw Root floored by a clip to the jaw. Back on his feet, Root was in serious trouble before being saved by the bell. Down again in the 11th and twice in the 12th from crashing body shots and swings to the jaw, the last knockdown saw Root unable to make it to his feet and counted out.
