1903-08-17 (108lbs) Tibby Watson w rtd 9 (15) Joe Williams, New City AC, Sheffield, England. Referee: George M. Wells. Billed for the world 108lbs title, both men making the weight comfortably, it was Williams who was ahead after six rounds after using the left jab to great effect. However, the seventh proved to be crucial as Watson came back strongly, forcing the fighting for all he was worth, to put Williams down twice. At this stage, Williams was so exhausted that he began slipping down without being hit in order to save himself, thus courting a disqualification. In the eighth, it was much of the same, with Williams decked three times, and in the ninth although he lasted out the session his corner wisely retired him during the interval.
