1903-08-25 (145lbs) Martin Duffy w pts 10 Matty Matthews, Athletic Club Auditorium, Port Huron, Michigan, USA. Referee: Ed McBride. According to the Chicago Tribune report, this was billed for the ‘white’ title at 145lbs, while the Detroit Free Press called it a battle for the light-welterweight championship. The Port Huron Daily Herald reported that Duffy cut the pace in the majority of rounds, landing at the rate of four to one, and in the opening five sessions he dealt Matthews some heavy punishment. In the seventh, while looking for a knockout, Duffy was nearly put out himself but Matthews was unable to take advantage. It was unclear whether the referee deducted points from Duffy when he threw Matthews to the mat, once in the first and twice in the eighth, actions that left the audience screaming for a foul. On 31 August at the same venue, Duffy risked his ‘white’ title at catchweights when he took on Gus Gardner, well inside 142lbs, while outweighing his rival by at least 15lbs.
